Education: English Baccalaureate

Paul Uppal: To ask the Secretary of State for Education what estimate he has made of changes in the number of pupils taking science, language, history and geography courses following the introduction of the English Baccalaureate.

Mr Gibb: Independent research commissioned by the Department for Education published in August 2011 suggests that the English Baccalaureate is having an immediate impact returning take up of core subjects to the heights of 10 to 15 years ago: it indicates increases of 8 percentage points in pupils taking history, 7 percentage points in geography, 9 percentage points in languages and a 12 percentage point increase of those taking triple science.
